There once was a time when almost every home would be painted in magnolia paint.
It was the default colour. Builders and property developers across the country would paint every wall in magnolia. Military accommodation and big chain budget hotel rooms are covered in magnolia emulsion. And landlords have followed suit. It seems that every rental property is painted in magnolia emulsion.
This is why we loved it so much. It matches almost everything, especially when the interior design trends were based around a brown or beige undertone. By painting your property magnolia, you could be confident that the furnishing matches almost any property. And its soft yellowy base colour was warming; it isn't as stark as white.
And so, magnolia was the colour of choice for property owners, landlords and developers across the country. We all went made for magnolia, painting every single room in our homes with it. It is estimated that over 65% of properties will still have at least one magnolia wall in the UK.
The use of magnolia emulsion has seen a dramatic decline recently after many years as the most popular colour. It feels dated and old-fashioned all of a sudden. Even if it's been newly painted, having magnolia emulsion in every room feels dated.
Many interior companies are opting for jewel-toned soft furnishings. The fashion is to have bold colours and luxurious fabrics, which, unfortunately, clash with the yellowy undertones of magnolia. Imagine an opulent crushed velvet emerald green sofa. Now imagine it pushed up against the wall of a living room's magnolia wall. It just doesn't look right.
If you're a tenant looking for a rental property to move into, you won't want to put your lovely new emerald sofa into a magnolia living room.
So, if you have a rental property that you are thinking of re-painting between tenancies, opt for white. White is simple, and although it can be a little stark, it matches the modern trends for bold colour schemes.
It would appear that the grand age of magnolia is officially over.
